2016 Innerkip Highlands Club Championship

The annual two day event saw a rough start with Mother Nature providing the competitors with a “Traditional Open Championship Feel”.  The players started their rounds in the morning under rainy conditions that finally gave way to sunshine around noon but the winds had picked up and made the course a real challenge… Well for most.  The Championship Flight looked as if it would be a one horse race as the weather seemed to have no impact on Travis Fanset’s round who came in with the Clubhouse Lead firing a 3 Under Par 69!  Two players in the B Flight also seemed mostly unaffected by the weather as Mike Higgs and Chris Desrochers were tied for the B Flight Lead shooting 82’s.  Even the leader in Men’s C Flight had a good start, Gary Penny carded an 81 for the lead in C Flight while Steve Brown took a 1 shot lead to the clubhouse in the D Flight with his round of 90.  And the Open Women’s Division came to life and we saw Carly Peister take a 1 stroke lead heading to Day 2 after shooting an Opening Round 87!

Day 2 was certainly a different story!  With clear skies and minimal winds it appeared that those who shot well on Day 1 would be tough to catch under such great course conditions.  However things certainly did change and there was some movement on the leader board in each of the Flights.  In the D Flight 3rd Place went to Randy Hawes who came back strong on the second day and scratched together a Two Day Total of 201.  2nd Place went to Day 1 Leader Steve Brown who slipped just enough to open the door shooting a Two Day Total of 183.  After 3 years of finishing as the Runner Up it was finally Steve Schell’s time to shine as he came back and played great golf on Sunday and is the 2016 Innerkip Highlands Golf Club D Flight Champion posting a Two Day Total of 182.

In C Flight things again got very interesting as the rounds progressed.  One would take the lead and then there was a tie, then a three way tie and then a leader and then a tie again and finally... Both Dave Sanders and Brad Mavin fought valiantly but in the end there was a Tie for 2nd Place.  Both Brad Mavin and Dave Sanders played some excellent golf shots down the stretch and put together Two Day Totals equaling 182.  Playing steady golf and making shots when they counted most the 2016 Innerkip Golf Club C Flight Champion is Gary Penny who put together rounds of 81 and 89 for a Two Day Total of 170.

With the most competitors registered for the B Flight surely we would see a shuffle and some pressure put onto the Day 1 Leaders Right?  Well, almost… The “golf gods” seemed to start and impose their will around the course and just when we thought it would get close, it didn’t.  None the less it was a great competition with the 3rd Place going to Mike Higgs who fought his way to a Two Day Total of 168.  Brian Tuinhof was able to make up some strokes on Sunday but not quite enough with his Two Day Total of 167 for a 2nd Place Finish.  The 2016 Innerkip Highlands B Flight Champion showed the poise and calmness often displayed by the Late Great Arnold Palmer.  Making steady shots and staying out of trouble Chris Desrochers played his way to the top with a Two Day Total of 164.

The Women's Open Division would best be described as “Small but Mighty”.  Although the field of competitors was smaller than the other flights, these ladies certainly did provide us with some excellent golf and something to not only cheer about but also to look forward to a division that will grow and see more ladies take part.  Day Two in the standing stayed just as it did following Day 1’s Rounds.  By playing steady and making shots when she needed to Barbara Collins posted a Two Day Total of 202 to take 3rd Place.  After trailing the top spot by just a single stroke going into the final day Maggie Bolt battled her way around the course on Sunday and came up just a bit short coming home with a Two Day Total of 185 for 2nd Place.  But the 2016 Innerkip Highlands Golf Club Women's Open Champion just got better on her second day of play and paced herself to a fantastic Two Day Total of 170.  Say hello to the inaugural Women’s Champion at Innerkip Highlands, Miss Carly Peister!

The question on everyone’s mind Sunday Morning was “How Low would Travis be able to go?”  Well things don’t always turn out the way we think they will and yes the “golf gods” decided that they were going to have some fun in the sun too on a Sunday.  Everyone started their final rounds with a positive mind set and the belief that anything could happen.  Finishing in 3rd Place in the Championship Flight with a 2 Day Total of 157 was Charlie Burke who played his game and made sure he didn’t leave anything to chance in his final round.  2nd Place went to Past Club Champion Corey Hamilton, who didn’t have an outstanding opening round but certainly turned things around on Sunday and carded a Two Day Total Score of 154.  But the big story of the day was would he or wouldn’t he?  It was a little shaky after the first 9 Holes were completed, but when the final putt was made and the scores were tallied up there was indeed a Brand New Club Champion. Congratulations to the 2016 Innerkip Highlands Golf Club Champion, Travis Fanset who shot a Two Day Total of 151.
